Reese Witherspoon breaks silence after AI support controversy

Reese Witherspoon has broken her silence following a wave of criticism over her support for artificial intelligence, insisting she is not being paid to promote the technology.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, The Morning Show star addressed the backlash over her recent “AI revolution” post, clarifying that her interest comes from being a “curious human” rather than a corporate spokesperson.

While acknowledging that her earlier remarks sparked widespread debate, Reese Witherspoon said her children are already learning to use such tools and that artificial intelligence is influencing every sector, from emerging “vibe coding” startups to more traditional industries.

The Oscar-winning actress had previously drawn criticism after noting that women are 25% less likely to use AI than men, despite their jobs being three times more vulnerable to automation.

Her comments triggered strong reactions online, with critics raising concerns over intellectual property, the environmental impact of data centres, and the risk of machines replacing human creativity.

In her latest response, Witherspoon acknowledged these concerns as valid, saying she understands worries about job security and environmental consequences. She also expressed caution about the rise of Artificial General Intelligence, making it clear she does not believe computers should ever replace humanity.

Despite the backlash, she remains committed to a “learn along with me” approach, describing the technological shift as inevitable for the future of filmmaking. Speaking previously to Glamour, she said that while people may resist change, it is already underway, adding that hands-on creation and human ingenuity will always represent the highest forms of art.

She also shared some of the tools she uses to stay informed, including AI assistants, the search platform Perplexity, and the shopping agent Vetted AI.
